Stay tuned for summer fishing reports from the East End Legend. He will be posting weekly from beautiful Lake Vermilion.
Fellow Anglers,
I was up at the cabin off and on during the past week. Seemed like it rained at some point each day with changes in wind direction almost daily. I fished a handfull of times and boated 19 Walleye. The fish were mostly on the mud flats. Most fish caught were in 18' to 24'. Bait rig with 1/2 crawler was my go to presentation. The evening bite was far better than the morning bite. The good news is the size is much better with alot of respectable keepers. I hope the bite continues to improve as fall approaches.

Fellow anglers,
The weather was hot, the walleye fishing was not!! Managed to boat 5 eye this weekend. My best outing was Saturday night, I caught 3 eye and missed at least that many. Tried a couple of spots but had my best success fishing the flats on Big Bay. The crayfish bite is incredible, they love grabbing onto your crawler and hanging on. Alot of other boats fishing this weekend with not alot of success. Fished in the same area as a couple of local guides Sunday morning and there success was no better than mine. Water temps are in the mid 70's. I'll keep plugging away and hope the bite improves.

Fellow anglers,
Last weekend I attended the "Perells" family reunion. This week on Friday night I was at the "relay for life" Cancer fund raiser. Finally headed to the cabin Saturday morning, drove in rain all the way there. Never got on the water Saturday morning. Saturday night I headed out to one of my favorite Summer spots. Got all baited up, dropped the trolling motor in and guess what, the Minnkota crapped out on me. There was a heavy northwest wind and I tried drifting but no luck, the drift was to fast. Needless to say it's not feasible trolling with a 175 Merc. Brought the Minnkota in this morning and hopefully they will get it fixed by Friday. On a side note I only saw a handful of Walleye fisherman Saturday night. From what I'm hearing the bite has been pretty anemic. We'll see what happens next weekend.

The walleye action heated up a bit in spite of the large Mayfly hatch. I boated 16 eye over the weekend. Several decent keepers with the big one at 20". I mostly worked the edges of the mud flats in the main basin. Was able to graph allot of fish but they clearly were not all active feeders. Strictly a crawler bite for me on the fish I did catch. Fishing should continue to improve each day as the Mayfly hatch comes to a conclusion. Fish on baby!!

06/27/2011 Fellow anglers,
Another tough weekend of Walleye fishing. I managed to boat 6 Walleye over the weekend. The weather conditions were mostly favorable with generally overcast skies and a pretty stiff wind. I fished my usual June spots and tried a couple of new spots as well. It seemed like I would catch a fish as soon as I dropped in and then nothing, pretty discouraging. The mayfly hatch is still happening, allot of carcasses on Big Bay Saturday morning. Combine that with the fact we were coming out of a front on Friday and that pretty much tells the story. The fish I caught were on Lindy rigs, plain hook tipped with crawlers. I did catch 1 fish working a leech. Angry minnows are dead to me until this fall.
6/19/2011 Fellow Anglers,
It was a 1 fish weekend, yup, 1 fish. I was fighting cold, windy and rainy conditions the entire weekend. My fishing outings were very limited due to the weather. Lot's of mayflies starting to show up which will continue to hinder the bite for awhile as well. There were very few other boats on the water this weekend. The good news is that fishing can only improve.
6/13/2011 Fellow anglers,
Another slow start to the weekend. Friday night I boated 1 walleye in last weeks hot spot. Saturday morning I had a big one on but it threw the hook before I could get it boated. Missed a couple of other light biters. Saturday night I boated 1 walleye and realized something had to change. I was graphing plenty of fish but couldn't get them to hit the minnows. Went in and picked up some leeches. Sunday morning I boated 6 walleye in 90 minutes using the leeches and Lindy rig set up. Next weekend I will continue to use leeches and add crawlers to my arsenal. The weather was sunny, mid 60's and light winds all weekend. There is allot of fish showing up on the graph but the mayflies are also starting to hatch. We'll see what happens next weekend. Lot's of people out fishing this weekend, most boats I've seen in quite awhile. East End Legend
6/05/2011 Fellow anglers,
After a tough start to the weekend fishing finally turned on Sunday. Friday evening I arrived at the lake to cloudy, rainy conditions with tornado warnings. I braved the elements and boated 2 small walleye before calling it quits. I worked my favorite spring spots. Saturday morning the weather improved dramatically, unfortunately we had heavy winds all day, we call this heavy wind "bow busters" in the fishing business. Between the morning and evening fish I only boated 2 small walleye. Again, I worked my favorite spring spots. Sunday I awoke to sunny skies and mild breezes. I went to a traditional summer spot and boated 9 walleye. 5 were nice chunky keepers. I did change my presentation from a jig to a lindy rig/red hook. While getting used to the conversion I missed several fish before settling in. Total production for the weekend was 13 walleye. No slot fish but 5 nice keepers. Will be back on the water next Friday. 3/12/2011 Fellow Anglers,
Even though it is quite wintry out I am counting down the days to the Vermilion Walleye opener. The Ranger Fisherman is ready to roll. The rods and reels are ready for action and the tackle box is fully stocked. Can hardly wait to get the cabin ready for another great Summer. I am expecting a much later ice out this year compared to last. You may recall last year we had unseasonably warm weather and a record early ice out on the "V". I personally feel the early ice out last year affected the Walleye bite considerably in May and early June. I caught plenty of eye but found them in very nontraditional Spring spots. If we have a normal ice out I will be trying my normal Spring spots this year. Hope to see you on the water. Keep those hooks sharp!!! East End Legend
